Man Charged with Murder After Daylight Stabbing in Merrylands

A man has been charged with murder following a stabbing incident in Merrylands, a suburb located approximately 30 kilometers from Sydney’s central business district. The attack, which occurred on February 17, 2023, resulted in one fatality and left several others critically injured.

Setefano Mooniai Leaaetoa, 25, is alleged to have carried out a random assault on unsuspecting individuals in broad daylight, just ten days after he reportedly absconded from a mental health care facility. Emergency services responded to multiple reports of a knife attack around 10:00 AM, leading to a swift police presence in the area.

The accused allegedly fled the scene on foot after the attack, which began inside a Nepalese grocery store. He was apprehended nearby on Smythe Street and subsequently taken to Granville Police Station. He faces charges of murder and two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.

At the scene, one victim succumbed to their injuries while another, a 21-year-old male, remains in critical but stable condition. A 47-year-old male is also hospitalized in stable condition, according to the Western Sydney Local Health District. The identity of the deceased has not yet been formally confirmed.

Details of the Attack and Suspect’s Background

CCTV footage aired by Australia’s 9 News captured the distressing moments of the assault, showing a man in a white bucket hat approaching the store counter before allegedly stabbing a woman in the neck. A male customer inside the shop was also reportedly attacked. Superintendent Simon Glasser confirmed that a knife measuring approximately 25 centimeters was used in the assault.

Leaaetoa was already known to law enforcement for previous minor crimes and several mental health-related incidents. His legal representation did not seek bail during his appearance at Parramatta Local Court on February 18. In addition to the current charges, he is facing a separate assault charge related to domestic violence, as reported by national broadcaster ABC.

Review Initiated into Escape from Care

In light of the incident, Rose Jackson, the New South Wales Minister for Mental Health, announced a review into the circumstances surrounding Leaaetoa’s escape from care. She stated that protocols were followed during his transfer from Cumberland Hospital to Westmead Hospital, where he was being assessed for further medical care.

According to a spokesperson for the health district, Leaaetoa managed to abscond on February 7, 2023, during this transfer. Despite notifying police and his family, efforts to locate him were unsuccessful. A formal review of his care and treatment is now underway to understand how he was able to leave the facility undetected.

The tragic events in Merrylands highlight ongoing concerns about the management of individuals with complex mental health needs and the importance of ensuring their safety and the safety of the community.
