Major Collision Closes M54 Motorway in Shropshire Overnight

A severe collision involving multiple vehicles has resulted in the closure of the M54 motorway in Shropshire. The incident occurred at approximately 23:40 hours on November 25, 2023, when a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) swerved across both lanes, leading to significant disruption.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, with West Mercia Police and National Highways Traffic Officers managing the complex traffic situation. The westbound carriageway is closed between Junction 2 (Wolverhampton) and Junction 3 (Albrighton). Reports indicate that the collision has also affected the eastbound carriageway, where lane 2 remains closed due to damage to the central barrier.

According to a spokesperson for National Highways, recovery operations are ongoing. The spokesperson stated, “The HGV has been righted. The remainder of the traffic within the closure is being released past the scene.” Despite the progress, the westbound carriageway will remain closed for emergency repairs, and lane 2 will stay closed on the eastbound side to facilitate the barrier crews.

Road users are advised to plan ahead and consider alternative routes to avoid delays. The recommended diversion for traffic on the westbound carriageway includes exiting at Junction 2 and taking the third exit onto A449 Northbound. Drivers should continue on A449 until reaching the Gailey roundabout, then take the first exit onto A5 Westbound. The route continues onto the roundabout with A41, where drivers should take the first exit onto A41 Southbound until arriving at M54 Junction 3.

As of now, no updates have been provided regarding the individuals involved in the crash. Authorities are urging motorists to remain cautious and to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbols displayed on road signs, ensuring safety while navigating the area.
