Family’s Close Call with Crocodile Near Home in New South Wales

A family in Newcastle, New South Wales, experienced a narrow escape when a mother initially dismissed her son’s report of a crocodile near their home. Stephanie Kirsop thought her 12-year-old son, Lionel Saunders, was joking when he called to say he had spotted a crocodile in the creek. However, upon investigating, she discovered that her son was indeed correct.

Kirsop recalls her disbelief as she made her way to the creek. “I thought I was being tricked,” she said. “When I arrived, I was amazed to see a crocodile swimming in the water.” The encounter highlighted the potential danger, as experts note that even the smaller species of crocodiles can inflict serious injuries.

The crocodile, identified as an Australian freshwater crocodile measuring approximately 99 centimeters (39 inches), was eventually captured about two miles from where it was initially spotted. Local authorities faced skepticism when Kirsop and her son reported the sighting, as they often receive false alarms in the area.

Billy Collett, manager of the Australian Reptile Park, expressed his initial doubts regarding the authenticity of the reports. “We get a lot of phone calls, and with the rise of artificial intelligence, it’s hard to distinguish real sightings from fakes,” he stated. Still, the images sent by Lionel convinced him of the situation’s seriousness.

The crocodile was healthy and is now residing at the Australian Reptile Park until a permanent relocation is determined. Collett emphasized the importance of removing the reptile from the creek, noting, “I just wanted to get him out of there because he would’ve perished in winter.” As it is currently autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, the risk of survival for the crocodile was a pressing concern.

Experts believe the crocodile was likely a pet that had been released into the wild after outgrowing its environment or becoming too difficult to manage. Collett confirmed the need for protective measures, as crocodiles are safeguarded under Australian law.

This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers present in local waterways, particularly in areas where children frequently swim and fish. Kirsop reflects on her family’s lucky escape and urges other parents to remain vigilant when it comes to wildlife encounters in their communities.
