URGENT UPDATE: The new flag design for Telford and Wrekin has been officially revealed, with nine-year-old Amelia from Randlay Primary School taking home the top prize in a competition launched in June. The announcement comes as excitement builds for the Telford Day celebrations on Saturday, November 29, 2023, when Amelia’s flag will be raised at Southwater Square.
In a highly competitive field, more than 4,000 votes were cast during a two-week online poll, with Amelia’s design emerging as the clear favorite. Her creation features the iconic Ironbridge, a cog symbolizing Telford’s rich industrial heritage, and vibrant green to represent the borough’s numerous parks and open spaces.
Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, expressed his heartfelt congratulations: “Huge congratulations to Amelia on winning the competition. The design has captured the hearts and votes of local people. Amelia should be really proud of what she has achieved in creating a flag to represent our borough, that we hope creates civic pride for many years to come.”
Amelia shared her joy, stating, “I’m really happy I’ve won the flag competition. I think we all did really well. I am excited to see my flag flying. Thank you to everyone who voted.” Her mother, Jayne, added, “We are incredibly proud of Amelia for winning the flag competition. Her design was creative and thoughtful and reflected Telford so well.”
As a reward for her achievement, Randlay Primary School will receive £250 to support arts and crafts supplies, fostering creativity among students. The other finalists, Mhairi, Valarie, and Dexie, were also recognized for their impressive designs, contributing to this inspiring community event.
Residents and local officials look forward to seeing Amelia’s flag proudly raised at Southwater Square during the Telford Day festivities, marking a significant moment of civic pride and community spirit.
