UPDATE: A tragic incident at Withernsea beach has left two people dead, prompting urgent responses from local authorities and the community. Paul Whitehead, owner of the Castle Café, described the event as a “tragic accident” following the confirmation of the fatalities and the suspension of the search for a third missing person in the icy waters this afternoon, January 3, 2023.
Just hours ago, Humberside Police reported the recovery of a 67-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed. Tragically, a second victim was confirmed shortly before 11:30 PM last night, leaving the community in mourning. The search for an unidentified third individual began immediately but was suspended at 4 PM today by HM Coastguard, which is leading the emergency response.
“This is literally a tragic accident,” Whitehead stated, addressing the outpouring of commentary on social media. He shared that one of his employees attempted to assist in the rescue operation by entering the treacherous waters. “I reviewed our CCTV footage from outside the café. It shows a woman and a girl at Pier Towers when a large wave struck,” he explained. The footage revealed that the girl was swept into the sea while taking photographs.
Whitehead emphasized the emotional toll on families affected by the incident, saying, “This could cause so much upset and sadness to these families.” He expressed gratitude for the quick response of local volunteers, particularly the RNLI, who risked their lives in rough sea conditions. “They were the first to launch,” he noted, commending their bravery.
The community is coming together in support, with the Castle Café offering tea, coffee, and comfort to those impacted by the tragedy. “We’ve been trying to support everyone in that way,” Whitehead said, also mentioning that local clergy have been present to provide solace to those in need.
As a mark of respect, flowers have been placed at the scene, reflecting the community’s grief. Whitehead revealed that two of his staff members were among the first responders, with one nearly rescuing the girl before being pulled back by the waves. “My staff member is okay but very shaken up, as you can imagine,” he said.
Authorities are urging the public to refrain from swimming in dangerous conditions, emphasizing the risks involved. The community of Withernsea is rallying together as they process the loss and the impact of this tragic accident.
For now, the focus remains on supporting the families affected and understanding the events that led to this heartbreaking incident. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues and community support efforts grow.
