Windy Hill Farm Celebrates 45 Years of Community and Growth

URGENT UPDATE: Windy Hill Farm in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, is celebrating nearly 45 years of success, transforming from a dairy farm into a thriving agricultural business. Owners Dennis and Judy Mareb reflect on their journey as they gear up for the busy holiday season, emphasizing the importance of community support and sustainability.

Located against the stunning backdrop of Monument Mountain, Windy Hill Farm has become a beloved destination for families seeking fresh-cut Christmas trees, pick-your-own blueberries, and a diverse range of locally grown produce. As the holiday season approaches, the Marebs are preparing to welcome visitors to their farm store, open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Marebs moved to their current location almost 50 years ago, driven by a passion for horticulture. Dennis, a graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, initially worked on a large estate while Judy taught first grade. Their dream of starting a farm materialized after they secured an abandoned dairy farm, which they transformed over five years into Windy Hill Farm with the help of a no-interest loan from the Lotta Crabtree Fund.

Windy Hill Farm has evolved into a comprehensive horticultural operation, boasting six acres of apple orchards and two acres dedicated to blueberries. The farm is particularly known for its unique offerings, including over 25 apple varieties such as Paulared, Ginger Gold, and Zestar, along with a selection of 15 winterberry varieties that add vibrant color to the landscape.

The Marebs have cultivated a loyal customer base by offering design and installation services alongside their nursery crops, which include ornamental shrubs and perennials. “Everyone who bought plants wanted design and installation services, so we began offering that in addition to producing trees, shrubs, and perennials,” Dennis explains.

As the holiday season approaches, the Marebs are excited to showcase their fresh-cut trees and handmade wreaths, which are highly sought after by locals and visitors alike. “Our u-pick blueberry fields are another highlight for Windy Hill customers each summer,” Judy points out, emphasizing the farm’s commitment to providing high-quality products and experiences.

The Marebs take pride in their sustainable practices, having completed an Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) in 2017 to ensure the land remains viable for future generations. “We’ve been so lucky that we’ve been able to make a living on the land and support so many families who work with us,” Dennis states, highlighting the emotional rewards of their hard work.

With the holiday season just around the corner, families are encouraged to visit Windy Hill Farm early for the best selection of Christmas trees and winterberry sleeves for festive decorations. As the Marebs reflect on their journey, they express gratitude for the support of the community that has helped them thrive over the decades.

Windy Hill Farm stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and community spirit, inviting everyone to share in their celebration this holiday season.
