US Air Force Safely Disposes of WWII ‘Super Bazooka’ Rockets

UPDATE: Just hours before New Year’s Eve, the U.S. Air Force has confirmed the safe disposal of two unexploded World War II-era “super bazookas” found at Assateague Island National Seashore. Discovered on December 30, 2025, this alarming find has prompted a swift response from bomb squad units and explosive ordnance disposal teams.

The first rocket was located shortly after 8:30 a.m. by National Park Service staff, who spotted a suspicious object on the beach. A second M29A1 practice rocket was recovered later from a residence on Greenwood Lane in Ocean Pines, Maryland, after investigators established it had been taken from the shore by a member of the public.

Both rockets were identified as M29A1 practice devices, often referred to as “Super Bazookas,” and were determined to be training ordnance, not live combat weapons. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during this critical operation, and explosives specialists have rendered the devices safe.

Authorities emphasize the potential dangers posed by these relics, as they can still contain hazardous components that may become unstable over time. Any unexploded military devices should never be touched or moved. “If you encounter something suspicious, leave the area immediately and call 911,” a spokesperson for the U.S. Air Force advised.

This incident highlights Assateague Island’s historical significance during World War II when it served as a military bombing and training range, leaving behind remnants now being uncovered by shifting sands and coastal erosion. While most dangerous items were neutralized shortly after the war, storms and heavy foot traffic can disturb buried explosives.

Officials urge the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution when exploring the area. As New Year’s celebrations approach, this discovery serves as a stark reminder of the past and the importance of public safety.

Stay tuned for further updates as authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess the area for any additional unexploded ordnance.
