Urgent Work Begins on Sea Defences at Folkestone Beach

URGENT UPDATE: Major construction has just commenced to bolster sea defences at Folkestone beach, an area severely impacted by landslips and ground movements. Yesterday, January 5, 2024, Network Rail officially began work to safeguard the railway line connecting Dover and Folkestone Central.

Drone footage captures the extensive preparations underway at The Warren, where significant cracks have been reported on the promenade. The Western beach and walkway have been closed to facilitate this critical project, scheduled for completion in April 2024.

In a strategic move to minimize disruption, construction materials are being delivered by barge. A staggering 18,000 tonnes of Boulogne limestone rocks will be deployed along approximately 300 metres of shoreline. Additionally, crucial drainage systems on the cliffs will be repaired, with 50 steel sheet piles installed behind the wall to prevent seawater from undermining the structure.

Trains will continue to operate normally during the construction, ensuring that the transportation network remains unaffected. David Davidson, Chief Operating Officer at South Eastern Railway, emphasized the importance of these repairs: “Folkestone Warren has experienced ongoing landslip movement for many years. To keep passengers, the public, and our colleagues safe, we monitor the area with hundreds of ground sensors that provide real-time data and alerts, allowing us to slow or stop trains if needed.”

The proactive measures being implemented are vital for protecting both the railway and the surrounding community. Davidson expressed gratitude to the local community for their patience and support during this essential project, stating, “This major intervention is a proactive step to protect both the railway and the Warren. However, the beach will remain closed while repairs are underway.”

As work progresses, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed about further updates regarding the ongoing developments at Folkestone beach. This situation is evolving rapidly, and community engagement is essential as the project unfolds.
