UPDATE: The British Gas Energy Trust has just announced vital support for households struggling with soaring energy costs this winter. The Individuals and Families Fund (I&F) is now available, offering grants of up to £1,700 to help clear outstanding energy debts for customers of any supplier.
As the temperatures drop, many households are facing the harsh reality of rising energy bills. With the Ofgem price cap set to increase by 2% from October 1, 2023, the average dual-fuel household will see annual costs rise to £1,755. This is a critical moment for families concerned about their ability to heat their homes safely.
The I&F program is specifically designed to assist individuals with credit or prepayment meter accounts who have fallen into energy debt. It is important to note that applicants do not need to be British Gas customers to qualify for this support. Even if your current supplier does not provide assistance, you can still apply to the I&F.
Chris O’Shea, Chief Executive of Centrica, which owns British Gas, emphasized the urgency of this initiative:
“As winter approaches, we know that rising household bills are a real worry for many people across the UK. Tackling energy debt and fuel poverty is a priority for us and we’re making sure help is available when it’s needed most.”
To apply for the I&F, residents of Scotland, England, or Wales must have an active energy account in their name and have received financial advice within the past six months. The I&F operates alongside the Energy Support Fund, which provides grants of up to £2,000 exclusively for British Gas customers.
With millions of households preparing for a challenging winter, this support package is critical. British Gas has committed £140 million to assist those in need, marking it as the UK’s largest voluntary energy support initiative. O’Shea urges anyone worried about keeping their home warm to seize this opportunity for assistance.
Time is of the essence. The financial landscape is shifting rapidly as energy bills rise, and many families are at risk. Apply to the Individuals and Families Fund today, and do not hesitate to visit local advice centers to access further support.
