Trial Opens for Kent Officer Accused of Sexual Assaults on Colleagues

UPDATE: A trial has begun for Ben Basden, a Kent Police officer accused of sexually assaulting two female colleagues. The trial commenced at Maidstone Crown Court on January 12, 2023, with shocking allegations of inappropriate touching and flirty behavior that left the victims feeling “uncomfortable.”

The jury learned that Basden’s alleged conduct, described as “tactile and touchy-feely,” involved inappropriate physical interactions during police duties in 2022. Prosecutor Steven Attridge detailed how the accusers reported “unerringly” similar incidents, including touching their thighs and waists while on the job. The court was also informed of instances where the women felt groped while traveling in police vehicles.

Basden, who denies four counts of sexual assault, claimed his behavior was merely “messing around” and part of a joke. He described himself as a “tactile person,” attempting to justify his actions, including winking and blowing kisses at the officers. However, the prosecutor stressed that the allegations were made by credible witnesses with no reason to fabricate their accounts.

One complainant recounted a disturbing experience where Basden allegedly squeezed her thigh and dismissed her discomfort, saying, “not to be boring and moody.” Another incident involved Basden standing uncomfortably close to her, allegedly pressing his groin against her. The prosecutor stated that such behavior was not only unprofessional but also made the victims feel acutely uncomfortable.

In a disturbing twist, it was revealed that some of the alleged incidents were captured on police station CCTV, showing Basden’s inappropriate actions. This evidence may play a critical role in the trial as it unfolds.

Both women refrained from reporting the assaults initially, fearing disbelief due to Basden’s popularity within the department. With the trial now underway, the jury’s role is pivotal in determining the truth behind these serious allegations.

The court will hear more details about the incidents and the defense’s arguments in the coming days. The developments in this trial not only highlight the serious nature of workplace conduct in law enforcement but also the broader implications for police culture and accountability.

Stay tuned for more updates as this trial progresses and the jury deliberates on the evidence presented.
