UPDATE: Telford Athletic Club is on a mission to rectify a promotion setback as they aim for a top-three finish in Division Three of the Birmingham League. Just confirmed, the reigning champions discovered they were ineligible for promotion post-season, but they are determined to reclaim their spot in Division Two.
As of this afternoon, Telford sits in second place in the league standings, trailing only behind leaders Tamworth and well ahead of third-placed Nuneaton. The club will host a crucial home meet at Attingham Park, near Shrewsbury, where over 200 runners are expected to compete. This race represents a pivotal moment in their season.
In the season opener at Leamington, Telford dominated the competition, winning the race for Division Three clubs with five runners finishing in the top ten. They scored a total of 55 points from their first six finishers, securing a decisive victory over Tamworth, who finished with 75 points, and Nuneaton, who ended with 142 points. Telford also captured wins in the B team and masters categories, showcasing their depth and talent.
Star runners are stepping up. Chris Rimmer, a former champion at the Midland Counties Under-20 Championships, finished second overall in the Division Three race, also claiming the top spot among runners over 35. He was closely followed by teammate Dan Onyango, who finished fifth. Newcomer Tomos Hales, the Shropshire road cycling champion, made an impressive debut for Telford with a ninth-place finish, while Charlie Preece rounded out the top ten.
The latest league race held at Cofton Park, Birmingham, saw Telford finish second once again, with Tamworth taking the top position. Onyango led the charge, placing third overall in the league standings for the season. Hales continued his ascent, finishing eighth and now standing sixth overall.
Telford’s runners are improving week by week, with notable performances from Jordan Stamp (14th), Paul O’Brien (18th), Craig Standrin (36th), and Dean Gapper (41st). These consistent finishes are critical as Telford works to secure their place in Division Two.
As Telford Athletic Club prepares for their next challenge, all eyes will be on their performance today. This is not just about racing; it’s about redemption and proving they belong at a higher level. Stay tuned for updates as they strive to overcome adversity and reclaim their position among the league’s elite.
