The race commenced at the Berkshire Family YMCA grounds, with enthusiastic participants donning capes and costumes. Despite initial weather concerns, the skies brightened, creating a festive environment filled with laughter and camaraderie. “Have fun out there; have a blast,” the announcer encouraged participants, setting a spirited tone for the day.
Runners of all ages took part, including Jayden Thomas, who surged ahead to claim victory with an impressive time of 17:37.3. He was followed closely by Joseph Carter at 18:00.4 and Thomas Crowers at 18:04.3. Participants ranged from as young as six years old to 79, showcasing the event’s appeal across generations.

The Superhero 5K not only promotes physical well-being but also mental health, as emphasized by Lorna Mattern, CEO of UCS. “The Superhero 5K really is about bringing the community together and having fun,” she stated. Proceeds from the race support Teens 4 Change, a local initiative that empowers youth through volunteer opportunities and leadership training.
As the race unfolded, volunteers from UCS, Head Start, and local emergency services ensured a smooth experience for participants. The festive atmosphere included cheering dogs in costumes and parents pushing strollers, underscoring the family-friendly nature of the event.
Community support was evident, with multiple sponsors backing the race, including the Bennington Banner and Coggins Toyota of Bennington. Local businesses also contributed snacks for participants, further enhancing the community spirit.
With the success of the Superhero 5K, organizers are already looking forward to next year’s event, which promises to be even larger. The community’s involvement reflects a collective commitment to health, support, and youth empowerment.
