UPDATE: Dozens of ferry services across Scotland are severely disrupted as strong winds batter the region. As of Thursday morning, 20 of CalMac’s 30 routes are impacted, with significant cancellations affecting ferries to South Uist and Barra.
The situation is worsening with disruptions reported on an additional 12 routes, including popular destinations such as Arran, Bute, Cowal, and Dunoon. Travelers heading to Cumbrae, Gigha, Harris, Islay, Kilcreggan, Lewis, and North Uist are also advised to expect significant delays. CalMac has warned that customers on six other routes face possible disruptions or cancellations at short notice.
This alarming weather event coincides with a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office for rain across the Central Belt, Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, and Argyll and Bute. Some areas could receive as much as 60mm of rain within 24 hours, prompting fears of flooding in homes and businesses.
Off the west coast and across the Hebrides, seas are predicted to be “moderate or rough, occasionally very rough,” with a north-easterly gale force eight warning still in effect. Wind speeds are expected to reach approximately 42 mph, with maximum wave heights around 7.5 metres.
On land, the Met Office warns that parts of the UK may experience a “month’s worth of rain” in just one day, leading to disruptions in bus and train services. Journey times for commuters and travelers are likely to be significantly impacted, with authorities advising caution.
The yellow weather warning is in place until 7 PM on Thursday, leaving many residents and travelers anxious about the potential for severe weather-related disruptions.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising the public to stay updated on local weather conditions and transportation services. With the situation developing, travelers are urged to check CalMac’s official website for real-time updates and to prepare for potential travel delays.
