Shropshire FA Unveils Team ’26 to Transform Grassroots Football

UPDATE: Shropshire FA has just announced the formation of Team ’26, an ambitious squad dedicated to revolutionizing grassroots football across the county. This passionate team is equipped with unique expertise to ensure football in Shropshire is safe, inclusive, and accessible for all. Their efforts are set to reshape the local football landscape, impacting communities every weekend through enhanced governance and support.

Leading the charge is Andy Weston, who took the helm as CEO of Shropshire FA in November 2023. With over 20 years of experience in football administration, Weston emphasizes a vision that transcends trophies, focusing on community engagement and opportunities for all players, including girls and those with disabilities. “Football has the power to bring people together,” Weston stated, echoing the core values of Team ’26.

Under his leadership, Shropshire FA has achieved full compliance with The FA’s Code of Governance and reached the Preliminary level of the Equality Standard. Recent initiatives, including partnerships with local organizations like the Shrewsbury Town Foundation, highlight his commitment to equality and inclusion in football. Support for female players, coaches, and referees is also a priority, with a major sponsorship from SEAH already secured.

The operational backbone of Team ’26 includes Zoe Griffiths, the Football Services & Governance Lead, who has been vital for over 15 years. Her extensive knowledge ensures that more than 170 clubs, 1,000 teams, and 13,000 players operate under safe and effective governance. Colleagues regard her as the “institutional memory” of Shropshire FA, crucial for maintaining the integrity of local football.

Another key player is Sam Griffiths, the Designated Safeguarding & Workforce Officer, who has been recognized nationally for her outstanding safeguarding efforts. Recently shortlisted for the Special Recognition Award at the 2025 County FA Recognition Awards, Griffiths tirelessly works to ensure a safe environment for players, parents, and coaches.

In addition, Tom Wellings, the Football Participation Officer, plays a pivotal role in facilities improvement and referee support. His experience with clubs like West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers positions him to make significant strides in developing Shropshire’s football infrastructure.

The team is further strengthened by Kemi Smallman, the Football Services Administrator, whose project management skills are vital for the smooth operation of leagues and competitions. Her dual role as a Welfare Officer at AFC Bridgnorth enhances her understanding of grassroots realities, allowing for improved support for local clubs.

Newly appointed Dylan Shinton, Football Development Officer, focuses on club development and community engagement. His local roots and passion for football aim to ensure that the sport remains accessible and enjoyable for all ages.

Joining the squad as the Digital Media & Participation Administrator, Luke Flindall is set to transform Shropshire FA’s digital presence. His recent initiatives, including launching a TikTok channel, are designed to engage younger audiences and promote grassroots participation.

With the expertise of UEFA A Licensed Coach Lawrence Wilson, Team ’26 is well-equipped to enhance coaching and educational programs across the region. His successful coaching background and commitment to player development will be instrumental in fostering talent in local communities.

Freelance PR consultant Sarah Thompson is also on board to amplify Shropshire FA’s visibility and celebrate grassroots achievements. Her extensive communications experience will help share the impactful stories emerging from this new team.

The formation of Team ’26 signifies a new era for football in Shropshire, where community ties and inclusivity are paramount. As they prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Shropshire FA to see how these developments translate into meaningful change on the pitch.
