UPDATE: Sefton Council has just confirmed its commitment to purchase The Salfordian Hotel in Southport, aiming to tackle the urgent issue of homelessness in the borough. This decision comes as the council faces growing concerns regarding the allocation of apartments for families.
The council announced its plans during a Special Meeting at Bootle Town Hall on November 19, 2023. Cllr Mike Sammon raised objections, questioning the exclusion of families from priority housing groups. He emphasized that the site, located near a popular family park, could be suitable for family accommodations.
Cllr Sammon stated, “This call in relates to the decision which states that The Salfordian will be used for single adults in priority groups. Families with children who are also a priority group have been excluded.” He called for clarity on why the council’s report did not include provisions for families.
In response, Cllr Liz Dowd, Sefton Council’s cabinet member for communities and partnership, reiterated the council’s statutory obligation to relieve homelessness. “The purchase of The Salfordian will support these aims,” she asserted, adding that 70% of those currently in temporary accommodation are single individuals.
Sefton’s assistant director of people and communities, Mel Ormesher, highlighted the pressing need for single-person accommodations, revealing that the council currently supports around 270 households experiencing homelessness. “The purchase of The Salfordian provides the council with an opportunity to increase its supply of temporary accommodation in-house and within the borough,” she noted.
The hotel, owned by Salford City Council since the 1960s, is being sold to Sefton to remain in public ownership. If the purchase proceeds, Sefton Council will apply for necessary planning approvals and initiate a consultation process.
Cllr Dowd stressed the importance of acting decisively, stating, “These people are our family and friends. So why would we not do all we can to provide a safe and secure roof over somebody’s head?”
The committee ultimately voted against Cllr Sammon’s objections, allowing Sefton Council’s purchase proposal to move forward. As discussions continue, local residents are encouraged to stay informed about the developments surrounding The Salfordian Hotel and its role in addressing homelessness in the community.
With homelessness rates rising, the urgency of this issue cannot be overstated. Sefton Council’s decision could provide much-needed relief to vulnerable individuals and families in the area. Further updates regarding the planning process and community consultations are expected soon.
