URGENT UPDATE: The number of rapes reported to police in Scotland has surged by 11% over the past year, revealing a shocking reality that a rape or attempted rape is reported every three hours. The latest figures, released by the Scottish Government, show that 3,043 incidents were reported in the year leading up to September 2025, a significant increase from 2,746 cases the previous year.
These alarming statistics highlight a broader trend in sexual violence, as reports of sexual crimes overall have risen by 7%, totaling 15,704 incidents. This includes a dramatic 25% increase in reports of rape or attempted rape since 2021.
Scottish Conservative Justice spokesman Liam Kerr called the figures “deeply alarming,” attributing the rise to cuts in policing and the weakening of the justice system under the SNP. “These numbers are unacceptable and reflect a growing crisis in public safety,” he stated.
The report also indicates a troubling rise in other crimes, with domestic abuse reports jumping by 22% to 2,817 incidents. Shoplifting has soared by 15% in just one year and a staggering 129% since 2021, prompting concerns for the safety of shopworkers.
Responding to the data, Sandy Brindley, chief executive of Rape Crisis Scotland, emphasized the need for proactive measures to prevent sexual violence. “It should be Scotland’s biggest source of shame that we continue to see unprecedented levels of sexual violence against women and girls,” Brindley said.
Former police officer and Scottish Lib Dem deputy leader Wendy Chamberlain acknowledged that increased reporting could be part of the trend, which is a positive step, but still represents a worrying escalation in crime.
Despite the grim statistics, Justice Secretary Angela Constance insisted that Scotland remains a safe place to live, citing a historical drop in crime rates since 1991. However, David Kennedy, general secretary of the Scottish Police Federation, warned that the statistics highlight an increasing gap between demand for policing and available resources.
As Scotland grapples with these rising crime rates, attention is now focused on potential policy responses that could address the root causes of this alarming trend. Authorities are urged to take immediate action to enhance safety and support for victims of sexual violence.
The situation is developing, and further updates are expected as the government and law enforcement agencies respond to these distressing statistics. This escalating crisis calls for urgent public discourse and action to ensure the safety and security of all citizens in Scotland.
