Prepare Your Car NOW: RAC Urges Drivers to Combat Icy Roads

UPDATE: With winter weather looming, the RAC has just announced urgent tips to help motorists avoid car breakdowns during icy conditions. Experts emphasize the importance of being winter-ready, as cold temperatures can exacerbate mechanical issues, leading to dangerous situations on the road.

The RAC has introduced a simple mnemonic: ‘FORCES’, outlining six critical checks every driver should perform before hitting the road. “We’d rather stop our members breaking down in the first place than have them suffer the inconvenience of being stuck at the side of the road,” a representative from the RAC stated.

1. F for Fuel: Ensure your tank is adequately filled. Icy surfaces can lead to stop-start driving, increasing fuel consumption significantly.

2. O for Oil: Check your oil levels before departure. Proper oil levels are essential for engine performance and to prevent unexpected mechanical failures.

3. R for Rubber: Inspect your tyres for proper inflation and sufficient tread depth. This is crucial for maintaining grip on slippery roads.

4. C for Coolant: Verify that your coolant levels are adequate to prevent overheating and freezing. This is vital in colder climates.

5. E for Electrics: Make sure all your lights—brake, fog, and indicators—are functioning properly. Visibility is often compromised during winter months.

6. S for Screenwash: Keep windscreen washer fluid topped up with a concentrated solution to combat ice and ensure clear visibility.

The RAC also advises drivers to prepare for the de-icing process. While it can be time-consuming, using a scraper and de-icing spray can expedite it. Homemade mixtures, such as a salt-water solution or vinegar-water mix, can also be effective. “Don’t wait until the first frost before discovering you have run out of de-icer: plan ahead,” the RAC warns.

Drivers are cautioned against using boiling water for de-icing, as it can crack the windscreen. Instead, opt for safer methods to protect your vehicle.

This guidance arrives as winter approaches, making it essential for all drivers to heed these recommendations to avoid breakdowns and ensure their safety on the roads. For more detailed information, visit the RAC’s official website.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and don’t let icy conditions catch you off guard this winter!
