URGENT UPDATE: Newport’s beloved **Tree of Light** is set to illuminate the grounds of **St Nicholas Church** once more, offering residents a heartfelt opportunity to remember their loved ones while supporting crucial local charities. The annual initiative, organized by the **Rotary Club of Newport** and **Newport Town Council**, invites community members to sponsor a light on the tree, with funds directed to charity.
This year, Newport Mayor **Thomas Janke** has designated **The Battle Back Centre** Lilleshall as the benefactor. Established in **2011** by the Royal British Legion, this center aids wounded service personnel returning from conflict zones. Today, it provides essential support and wellbeing programs for veterans facing various challenges.
The **Tree of Light** was installed on **November 17** and will be officially lit up during the town’s Christmas lights switch-on event on **Saturday, November 22**. The community is encouraged to participate by sponsoring a light, with a minimum contribution of just **£5**. Names of those remembered will be published in the **Newport Advertiser**, and a memorial book will be displayed at the town’s library early next year.
A club spokesperson expressed excitement about launching the **Tree of Light** appeal for **2025**, stating, “We hope the local community will again be generous in their financial support for ongoing worthwhile causes, while also remembering a loved one as we approach Christmas.”
Residents can obtain sponsorship forms from the **Newport Advertiser**, Ace Computers at **101 High Street**, or at the Newport Town Council desk in the library. A drop box for completed forms and payments will be available at both High Street locations. Note that all submissions must be completed by **Thursday, December 11**.
