UPDATE: Mourners have gathered at Rochester Cathedral to pay their final respects to Major David Richmond, who passed away at the age of 55 on October 9. The tribute to this “one of a kind” Army major reflects the profound impact he had on his community and the military family.
As family, friends, and military colleagues filled the cathedral yesterday, the atmosphere was charged with grief and admiration. Major Richmond, a member of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, was remembered as a “great warrior” whose life was cut short by a long illness. The ceremony highlighted his remarkable contributions and the deep connections he fostered throughout his life.
Former Rochester and Strood MP Kelly Tolhurst expressed her heartfelt condolences, stating, “Today was one of those moments where you are truly moved—seeing a packed cathedral full of love for a man who was one of a kind.” She emphasized that Major Richmond was “taken from us far too young,” underscoring the loss felt by all who knew him.
Major Richmond, affectionately known as “Dykie,” began his military service in 1986 with the 2nd Battalion The Queen’s Regiment in Minden, Germany. He quickly established himself as an exceptional soldier, particularly excelling in boxing. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, becoming a Warrant Officer Class 2 in 2007 and serving as the Operations Warrant Officer during Op Telic 5 in Iraq.
After leaving regular service in 2010, Major Richmond pursued a civilian career but returned to military life in 2011 with 3 PWRR, eventually joining the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment C Company in Rochester. He served as company commander in 2017 and as battalion second-in-command in 2020, demonstrating his dedication to his country.
The regiment honored his legacy, stating, “Dave remained throughout his career a very popular, charismatic and trusted character with a fantastic sense of humour.” His generosity and integrity earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike, making his absence deeply felt.
Major Richmond is survived by his devoted son, Jack, and his wife, Vicky, who were central to his life and happiness. The outpouring of love and support from the community illustrates the lasting impact he made on the lives of those around him.
As the community continues to mourn, tributes are expected to pour in, celebrating the life of a man who dedicated himself to serving others. The military community is particularly affected, as they reflect on the loss of one of their own.
Authorities and community leaders are calling for continued support for Major Richmond’s family as they navigate this difficult time. Future memorials and tributes are anticipated, ensuring that his legacy as a dedicated leader and loving father will not be forgotten.
