UPDATE: London is on high alert as significant protests are set to unfold this weekend near both the US Embassy and the Iranian Embassy. The demonstrations, reflecting escalating geopolitical tensions, are scheduled for Saturday afternoon, with multiple organizations participating.
The first event, the Stage for Freedom demonstration, will commence from Whitehall and march towards Kensington Road, near the Iranian embassy in Knightsbridge. This protest is organized in opposition to the Iranian government. Simultaneously, another coalition march involving the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), the Stop the War Coalition, and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign will converge at the US Embassy, beginning at Millbank. This protest aims to call for an end to military actions against Iran.
In response to the anticipated protests, the Metropolitan Police have put in place strict measures, requiring demonstrators to follow designated routes and conclude their rallies by 5 PM. Amplified noise equipment for music or speeches has been banned at the anti-Iranian government protest to minimize disturbances to local residents.
Moreover, a separate protest organized by CND is set to occur at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire starting at 1 PM. This demonstration is against potential use of the base by US bombers, following a controversial decision by Sir Keir Starmer to permit the use of UK bases for US strikes targeting Iran.
The Gloucestershire Constabulary has confirmed it will deploy officers to manage the protest, emphasizing a commitment to maintaining public safety while respecting the right to peaceful assembly. A spokesperson stated, “We will provide a proportionate and lawful police response to help keep everyone safe.”
Sophie Bolt, general secretary of CND, voiced strong opposition to the military strategies, stating, “We demand an end to the illegal bombing of Iran and an end to the escalation. International diplomacy and dialogue have never been more critical.” She urged Starmer to halt Britain’s military support and shut down US bases.
In anticipation of the protests, Scotland Yard has increased patrols around key sites and affected communities in London. Deputy Assistant Commissioner James Harman reiterated the police’s duty to maintain order, stating, “We have a duty to make sure people can go about their lives without being intimidated.”
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on London this weekend. The protests represent a significant moment in the ongoing discourse surrounding UK foreign policy and its implications on global peace and security. Expect updates as events unfold.
