Jazz, Art, and Music Events Ignite December in Upstate NY

UPDATE: A series of exciting cultural events are set to unfold in Upstate New York this December, featuring acclaimed artists and captivating performances. These events promise to enliven the local arts scene and engage audiences with music and visual arts.

THIS WEEKEND: Jazz lovers are in for a treat as the Aimée Allen Jazz Quartet performs at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in Tivoli, NY, on Saturday, December 6 at 7 p.m. Allen, a rising star in the jazz world, has roots in classic jazz and has performed across Paris. Her latest album, “Love & the Catalyst,” has garnered significant acclaim. Joining her on stage will be renowned musicians including Francois Moutin on bass, Tony Romano on guitar, and Kenn Salters on drums. Tickets are available online.

On Sunday, December 7 at 4 p.m., the Vivace Chamber Orchestra will grace the stage at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington. This elite ensemble, known for its conductor-less format, will perform a program featuring works by Mozart, Britten, and Mendelssohn. Artistic Director Luke Fleming highlights the unique listening experience this format facilitates, promoting a sense of unity among musicians. From December 5 through 28, art enthusiasts can explore the “Birds, Bricks, and Bozos” exhibit at Future Lab(s) Gallery in North Adams. The exhibit features works by local artists Stacey Dreher, Jeff Faerber, and Eric Wallen. An opening reception kicks off the exhibit on December 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., inviting the community to engage with unique artistic expressions.

Additionally, MASS MoCA will unveil “Zora J Murff: RACE/HUSTLE” from December 6 through winter 2026. This thought-provoking exhibition challenges viewers to confront difficult truths about Black life in America through Murff’s compelling photography and collages. A special conversation featuring political philosopher Joy James and curator Terence Washington will occur on December 3 at 5:30 p.m., providing deeper insights into the exhibition’s themes.

Finally, the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art will host “Solstice Spells” on Thursday, December 4 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. This engaging game night will include tabletop games, tarot readings, and live music by The Lucky 3, creating a festive atmosphere for families and friends in Amherst.
