Ireland Unveils €23M Boost for Digital Hubs Amid EU Program Surge

UPDATE: Ireland has just announced a substantial funding boost of €23 million for its four European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIH) as the program enters its critical second phase this year. This urgent investment aims to enhance the digital capabilities of businesses across the country, providing more than 200 training courses and facilitating over 3,000 engagements nationwide.

The EDIH program, which launched in 2023, is designed to improve competitiveness among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and public sector organizations through digital transformation strategies involving AI, cybersecurity, and automation. Currently, more than 450 hubs operate across Europe, serving as vital “one-stop shops” that offer technical expertise, financing advice, and industry insights.

In Ireland, the four designated hubs—CeADAR at University College Dublin, FactoryxChange in Mullingar, Entire at the Tyndall National Institute in Cork, and Data2Sustain at Atlantic Technological University in Sligo—are set to play pivotal roles in this initiative. During the second phase, running until 2029, these hubs are expected to deliver over 1,100 “Test Before Invest” projects in addition to their training offerings.

Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke, TD, emphasized the importance of this funding, stating,

“Extending the European Digital Innovation Hub programme in Ireland into Phase 2 ensures that our SMEs will continue to access world-class digitalisation support.”

He highlighted the transformative impacts already seen, as the hubs have successfully assisted businesses in adopting modern technologies that bolster sustainability and competitiveness.

Furthermore, Enterprise Ireland CEO Jenny Melia expressed pride in supporting the program’s continuation, stating,

“By scaling up access to ‘Test Before Invest’ facilities, specialist expertise, and targeted training nationwide, we are helping businesses accelerate productivity, build resilience, and remain competitive in an increasingly digital global economy.”

Notably, two of the hubs—FactoryXChange and CeADAR—have received the prestigious STEP Seal from the European Commission, recognizing their excellence in innovation. The other two hubs are currently under evaluation for the same accolade.

This funding announcement marks a vital step towards ensuring that Ireland’s businesses can thrive in a rapidly digitalizing world. As the EDIH program progresses, the focus will remain on equipping enterprises with the necessary tools to future-proof their operations and enhance their market presence.
