Inquiry Reveals Late Restrictions Led to Covid Deaths in Wales

UPDATE: A devastating report from the UK Covid-19 Public Inquiry reveals that late restrictions significantly worsened Covid-19 deaths in Wales. The findings, presented by Baroness Heather Hallett, indicate that all four UK governments underestimated the pandemic’s risks, resulting in unnecessary fatalities.

The inquiry’s investigation highlights that despite strong advice on October 5, 2020 for immediate further restrictions, the Welsh Government implemented a two-week “firebreak” only on October 23. From August to December 2020, Wales recorded the highest age-standardised mortality rate among the four UK nations, raising urgent questions about governmental response.

Baroness Hallett’s report points to a combination of delayed local restrictions and premature relaxations as critical factors contributing to the high death toll. Witnesses, including former First Minister Mark Drakeford, argued that funding from the UK government influenced their decision-making. However, the report dismissed this notion, emphasizing that the Welsh Government should have recognized the escalating crisis earlier in January and February 2020.

The findings have reignited calls for a Wales-specific inquiry into the government’s handling of the pandemic. James Evans, Conservative shadow cabinet secretary for health and social care, expressed the need for an independent investigation, stating, “These findings prove we still need a Wales-specific independent inquiry.” He emphasized that significant failures led to Wales having the highest death rate in the UK, despite strict lockdowns.

Current First Minister Eluned Morgan acknowledged the report’s findings, thanking Baroness Hallett and her team while expressing condolences for those lost to Covid-19. She stated, “We will work with the other UK governments over the coming months to carefully consider and act on its recommendations.”

In reaction to the report, Heledd Fychan, a member of the Plaid Cymru Senedd, described it as a “damning condemnation” of both Welsh and UK governments. “Today’s report is a stark reminder of the human cost of the Covid pandemic here in Wales,” she stated. She criticized both Labour and Conservative parties for their slow response, which she believes cost lives.

The inquiry’s conclusions underscore a critical need for transparency and accountability in government actions during the pandemic. As the report continues to stir public discourse, many bereaved families are still seeking answers and clarity regarding the decisions that led to their losses.

With the Welsh Government pledging to learn from the pandemic, the focus now turns to whether a dedicated inquiry will be established, as families and communities demand justice and understanding for the devastating impacts of Covid-19.
