Hoosick Falls Man Extradited for Violent Assault in Vermont

UPDATE: A man from Hoosick Falls, Adam Joseph Sargood, 41, has been extradited to Vermont following a violent domestic assault incident that occurred on October 16, 2023, in North Bennington. This alarming development has raised serious concerns about domestic violence in the community.

Authorities confirm that Sargood was arrested two weeks after the incident, following a police affidavit detailing a chilling scene outside Pangea Restaurant. Officers from the Bennington Police Department responded to a distress call about a woman screaming for help and being chased by a man. The victim, who reported that she is currently pregnant, flagged down police in the parking lot of E&G Mart on Bank Street.

According to her account, Sargood allegedly pulled her hair, strangled her, and threw a car speaker at her, causing her to fall. The victim disclosed that this was not the first instance of violence in their relationship, stating, “he gets mean when he drinks.”

On December 15, 2023, with an arrest warrant issued, Sargood was apprehended in New York and extradited back to Vermont. During his arraignment, prosecutors requested that Sargood be held without bail due to the severity of the allegations. However, defense attorney Susana Bliss argued for his release, emphasizing his clean criminal record and the time he had already spent in custody.

Judge John Valente ultimately agreed to set bail at $10,000 unsecured, imposing strict conditions including no alcohol, no firearms, and no contact with the victim. Following the judge’s ruling, Sargood was released from custody. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

The community is urged to remain vigilant as a status hearing is scheduled for early March. This case highlights the devastating impact of domestic violence and the urgent need for protection for victims. All defendants in Vermont are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
