UPDATE: The Ellesmere Winter Festival transformed the town into a festive wonderland on November 28, 2023, as hundreds of residents gathered to witness a magical parade featuring a replica of the iconic Polar Express locomotive. The event, marked by a spectacular lantern procession, captivated families and children eager to meet Father Christmas.
Just moments after arriving at the canal wharf on an illuminated narrowboat, Santa embarked on a whimsical journey through the main streets, delighting onlookers as he handed out gifts at a Christmas grotto located in the market hall. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as dozens of children participated in the festivities, showcasing lanterns they crafted in workshops organized by the local arts group, Fizzgigs.
The evening’s highlights included the official switching on of the town’s Christmas lights by Mayor Councillor Liz Woodbridge, who commended the community’s efforts to create a joyful environment. “It’s wonderful to see everyone come together to celebrate the holiday season,” she stated.
The festive spirit continued as children from Ellesmere Primary School and a local brass band entertained the crowd with carols and holiday classics. Families enjoyed rides on a ferris wheel and explored bustling stalls selling food, drinks, and unique gifts.
The market hall and surrounding streets were alive with activity, showcasing beautifully decorated shops that remained open late into the evening. The Sequel Trust took home the award for the best-decorated shop window, adding to the competitive spirit of the festival.
Organized by SY12 Business Enterprise in collaboration with local traders, the Ellesmere Rotary Club, and various community groups, the event emphasized unity and festive cheer. As the night unfolded, the joy of the season was palpable, leaving families with lasting memories.
As the festival continues, residents and visitors are encouraged to partake in the ongoing festivities, ensuring that the spirit of the holiday remains vibrant in Ellesmere.
