Driver Dies in Belleeks Bus Crash Involving 40 Schoolchildren

UPDATE: A tragic bus crash in Belleeks, Co Armagh has claimed the life of a bus driver while transporting 40 schoolchildren from St Paul’s High School. The incident occurred shortly before 3:45 PM on October 31, 2023, when the vehicle flipped over on Tullyah Road, leaving it precariously perched on its side.

Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as children scrambled to escape through windows and the roof of the overturned bus. Fortunately, no students sustained serious injuries during this devastating crash. However, the driver, employed by Quinn Coaches, succumbed to injuries shortly after the incident, according to company officials.

A spokesperson for Quinn Coaches expressed deep sorrow over the loss:

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our drivers was involved in a road traffic accident whilst transporting school children today. Despite immediate emergency response, our dear colleague sadly passed away. Our first thoughts are with his family, friends, and fellow colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”

The spokesperson also reassured the public, stating:

“We are relieved to confirm that no children were injured during the incident. The safety and wellbeing of our drivers and passengers is always our highest priority.”

Emergency services, including five ambulances, two advanced paramedics, and an ambulance doctor, were dispatched to the scene at 3:38 PM. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service confirmed they are treating patients on-site.

As police and crash scene investigators comb the area for answers, the principal of St Paul’s High School, Dáithí Murray, has communicated with families, assuring them that all children were safe and returned home. He emphasized the emotional impact of the incident, stating:

“We appreciate that this will have caused a significant shock to pupils who experienced the incident.”

In response to the tragedy, the Education Authority announced that its Critical Incident Response Team will be at the school on Wednesday to provide support for affected students. Murray encouraged students to attend school if they feel well enough and assured them that staff would be available to guide them to support services.

Authorities are urging road users to avoid the Tullyah Road area as they continue their investigation. A spokesperson for the PSNI stated:

“Road users are advised of a collision in the Tullyah Road area of Belleeks between Newtownhamilton and Camlough. Please avoid the area and seek alternative routes. An update will be issued in due course.”
