The Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) has stated that they are actively working to identify individuals involved in unauthorized streaming services. Their strategy includes a method known as “knock and talk,” where representatives visit homes to inform users about the legality of their actions. According to FACT, “We utilise a range of methods to identify individuals engaged in unauthorised businesses that offer access to illegal streams.”
To further bolster these efforts, Amazon has implemented measures to prevent sideloading on its latest Fire TV Stick model. This move is seen as a critical step in making illegal streaming more challenging. The company aims to reduce the accessibility of these “dodgy” devices that allow users to bypass payment for streaming and sports services.
Using or distributing these unauthorized Fire TV Sticks could lead to fines as high as £1,000. FACT reported a significant increase in the number of reports linked to illegal streaming via Fire TV Sticks over the past year. They have partnered with Crimestoppers to facilitate reporting and have seen a surge in intelligence related to these activities.
During the home visits conducted in collaboration with law enforcement, individuals are informed of their potential legal repercussions. FACT noted, “These home visits… serve to inform individuals about their activities and the immediate need to cease and desist or face further action or prosecution.”
In addition to the visits, FACT’s Intelligence Unit investigates the reports received and follows up with a systematic program that includes sending out ‘Cease and Desist’ letters. This comprehensive approach aims to dismantle networks that distribute these illegal devices.
