Ollie Lawrence Ruled Out of Argentina Clash Due to Injury

Ollie Lawrence, a standout player in England’s recent victory against New Zealand, has been ruled out of the upcoming match against Argentina due to a hamstring strain. The injury occurred late in the game on July 15, 2023, at the Allianz Stadium in Twickenham, where Lawrence not only scored a try but also assisted in another for his teammate Fraser Dingwell. This absence marks a significant setback for England as they aim to secure an 11th consecutive win.

With Lawrence sidelined, there is a strong possibility for his clubmate Max Ojomoh to step into the spotlight. Ojomoh is among eight Bath Rugby players selected for the training squad ahead of the clash with Argentina. The 25-year-old has previously made his senior England debut and was vice-captain for the recent England A squad that faced the New Zealand XV. His inclusion comes at a crucial time as England prepares to maintain its winning momentum.

Another player making a return is lock Charlie Ewels, who has recovered from a knee injury sustained against Sale Sharks earlier this month. His return is especially important as England will be without Ollie Chessum for this match. Ojomoh is one of three specialist centres called to the training camp at Pennyhill Park, joining Northampton’s Dingwell and Exeter’s Henry Slade. Saracens’ Elliot Daly, who has fully recovered from a broken arm, has also joined the fold as a versatile option.

The injury list does not end there. Winger Tom Roebuck from Sale Sharks is out with a foot injury, while Northampton’s Tommy Freeman misses out due to a hamstring strain. This opens the door for Bath’s Henry Arundell, who is well-positioned to start against Argentina. Additionally, Saracens’ promising young player Noah Caluori has been invited to join as wing cover after impressing with a try for England A in a recent match against Spain.

Freddie Steward, who exited the New Zealand game early due to a potential concussion, has been cleared to play after passing subsequent head injury assessments. In the front row, Jamie George has been ruled out with a hamstring issue, creating an opportunity for Theo Dan to make his first appearance of the autumn series.

Bath Rugby’s training squad also includes loosehead prop Beno Obano, tighthead Will Stuart, flankers Sam Underhill and Guy Pepper, and scrum-half Ben Spencer. Head Coach Steve Borthwick is expected to announce his final team selection on Friday, though reports suggest he may release the lineup as early as Wednesday.

As England gears up for this crucial match against Argentina, the team will be looking to overcome these injury challenges and extend their winning streak.
