Flamengo Terminates Filipe Luís After Dominant 8-0 Victory

Flamengo has decided to part ways with coach Filipe Luís, a move announced shortly after the club’s impressive 8-0 victory against Madureira in the Carioca Championship on March 4, 2024. This win allowed Flamengo to progress to the championship final with an aggregate score of 11-0. Despite this success, the team has faced significant struggles at the start of the season, marking one of its worst openings in the past decade.

The Rio de Janeiro club’s performance in recent competitions has raised concerns among fans and management alike. Flamengo’s earlier defeats included a loss in the Brazilian Super Cup to Corinthians and an exit from the South American Recopa at the hands of Lanús. Currently, the team sits in 11th place in the league standings, having accumulated only four points from their first three matches.

In a formal statement, Flamengo announced, “Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that, as of this Tuesday, Filipe Luís will no longer be in charge of the professional team.” The club also confirmed that assistant coach Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares are leaving as well. Flamengo expressed gratitude towards Filipe Luís for his contributions, wishing him success in his future endeavors.

Filipe Luís, 40, initially joined Flamengo as a player in 2019, where he played a pivotal role in the club’s success, securing a total of 10 trophies, including two Brazilian league titles and two Copa Libertadores championships. Transitioning to a coaching role in 2024, he achieved an impressive record of 64 wins in 101 matches while overseeing the team.

His recent success, particularly in leading Flamengo to victory in the Brazilian Serie A, the Copa Libertadores, the Campeonato Carioca, and the Brazil Supercopa in 2025, had attracted interest from various European clubs. Despite this, Filipe Luís opted to extend his contract with Flamengo for an additional two years in December 2023.

As Flamengo prepares for the upcoming final, speculation surrounds who will take over the coaching responsibilities. Jardim, who has been without a position since leaving Cruzeiro in December, is among the potential candidates to lead the team moving forward.

The decision to dismiss Filipe Luís reflects the club’s desire to turn around its current fortunes and regain its standing in Brazilian football.
