Karim Benzema has called on Kylian Mbappé to enhance his performance during crucial matches for Real Madrid. Following his departure from Madrid to join Al Ittihad on a free transfer in July 2023, Benzema reflected on his time with the Spanish club and the expectations placed on his former teammate.
Speaking to the press, Benzema emphasized that Mbappé, who is regarded as one of the top talents in football, possesses the skills necessary to excel in high-pressure situations. “He’s much better; scoring goals isn’t new to him,” Benzema stated. “He did it at Paris Saint-Germain, and at Real Madrid, he’s going to score many more.”
In his first season with Real Madrid, Mbappé, 26, demonstrated his prowess by netting an impressive 43 goals across all competitions, securing the title of La Liga’s top scorer. This season, he has continued his strong form, tallying 18 goals in just 16 games. Benzema noted that while Mbappé has the potential to shine, he must focus more during critical moments of the game.
“He needs to focus more on these moments when Real Madrid needs him because he has everything needed to do it,” Benzema said. “There will be games where Mbappé won’t touch the ball, but what we expect from him is that when he gets the chance, he’ll put it away.” He pointed to specific matches against teams like Atlético Madrid and Liverpool as examples where Mbappé’s scoring ability is crucial.
Benzema further elaborated on the dynamics within the team, highlighting the importance of communication among players. “I think Vinícius, Mbappé, Jude Bellingham… they have to communicate,” he remarked. “One is there to score goals, another to provide assists. We’re not going to tell Bellingham to score goals because that’s Mbappé’s job, nor tell him to be the number 10 because that’s Bellingham’s role.”
As for his own career, Benzema expressed satisfaction with his time in Saudi Arabia and did not dismiss the possibility of extending his contract with Al Ittihad, which currently runs until June 2026. “My contract here is nearing its end, that’s true,” the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner noted. “I still can’t say whether I’ll stay or leave; it depends on many things. I’ll be 38 in December. I see myself playing football for another two years. Physically, I’m fine, I work hard, and I’m playing football. I love football, I enjoy it.”
Benzema emphasized the importance of communication with club management regarding his future. “The best thing for me is to continue here, but also not just stay for the sake of staying for another year or two. I can’t do that,” he said. He also acknowledged the rising quality of football in the Saudi league, indicating a positive trend for the sport in the region.
As Real Madrid continues its campaign, all eyes will be on Mbappé to see if he rises to the occasion as Benzema has urged, particularly in the pivotal matches that define the season.
