Transform Your Towels: Expert Tips for Softness and Freshness

Towels can lose their softness and become rough due to various factors, such as excessive detergent, outdoor drying, or hard water. Many individuals prefer the luxurious feel of soft, fluffy towels, particularly when entertaining guests. To help maintain this desirable texture, experts suggest using common household items like baking soda and white vinegar.

According to Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap, both baking soda and white vinegar are effective solutions for softening towels. He recommends incorporating these ingredients into your laundry routine to achieve optimal results. “Simply add 250ml of white vinegar to the washing machine drum alongside the liquid detergent you normally use and dry as normal,” Dimitrov advises.

For an alternative method, he suggests using bicarbonate of soda. “Mix eight tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with your laundry detergent before putting it in the washing machine,” he adds. This technique helps loosen towel fibers and remove dirt, keeping them “as good as new.”

Many people express concerns about the scent of white vinegar in their laundry, fearing it may leave a lingering odor. However, Dimitrov assures that towels will not retain the smell of vinegar after washing. White vinegar is widely available in supermarkets, including Tesco, where it can be purchased for approximately 35p.

Additional Tips for Fluffy Towels

In addition to using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, there are other strategies to ensure towels remain soft and fluffy. Jessica Hanley, founder of Piglet in Bed, emphasizes the importance of washing towels separately from other items. “Washing towels with clothes can transfer a lot of bacteria between each item in the washing cycle,” she explains.

Another helpful tip is to shake any excess water from towels before placing them in the dryer. Hanley notes that this practice helps fluff the material and maintains its absorbency. By following these expert recommendations, individuals can enjoy the comfort of soft, fluffy towels after every wash.

Overall, the combination of white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, and proper washing techniques can significantly enhance the quality of towels. This simple approach not only extends the life of towels but also ensures they remain fresh and inviting for use.
