Broadway star Lea Salonga’s son, Nic Chien, recently shared a significant milestone in his transition journey by announcing that he has undergone top surgery. This revelation comes as he celebrates Transgender Awareness Week, where he posted a shirtless photo on his Instagram account, @nicchien.official, showcasing his transformation and newfound confidence.
At just 19 years old, Chien has been open about his experiences as a transmasculine individual, using his platform to inspire others facing similar challenges. He began his transition at the age of 14 and began taking testosterone in January 2025 as part of his gender-affirming process. In a heartfelt post, he reflected on his top surgery, stating, “Was able to finally get top surgery last September. Been waiting to heal enough to post a nice-looking picture of myself. The healing process was brutal! But worth it.”
Chien expressed that the surgery has significantly reduced his gender dysphoria and improved his mental health. He noted, “Not having to wear a binder, be afraid of judgment, and being able to be shirtless has been one of the most gratifying things EVER.” By sharing his journey publicly, he aims to raise awareness and visibility for the transgender community, hoping to help others feel seen and understood.
Creative Pursuits and Family Support
Like his mother, Chien has a deep connection to the arts. He made his professional stage debut in Manila as Alice in Matilda the Musical and has continued to perform in various productions. His upcoming role as Jack in Into the Woods is particularly special, as it marks his first significant performance as a male character, sharing the stage with his mother for the first time in a major production.
Beyond theatre, Chien has also explored visual arts, having designed cover artwork for one of Salonga’s singles. This creative outlet showcases his talents beyond acting and highlights the diverse skills he brings to the table.
Throughout his journey, Chien has received unwavering support from his mother, who has emphasized the need for understanding and unconditional love in parenting a trans child. Salonga stated, “You have to raise your child the way your child needs to be raised.” Reflecting on her son’s coming out at 14, she acknowledged the patience and understanding required in such a journey, saying, “I’ve learned how to raise a child who is their own being.”
On Chien’s 19th birthday, Salonga shared a touching message on Instagram, expressing her pride in his growth and self-discovery. Chien’s journey has not only been about personal affirmation but also highlights the importance of visibility for transgender youth, normalizing discussions about their experiences.
A Message of Acceptance and Visibility
The support that Lea Salonga has provided has been described as “fierce” by fans and media alike, underscoring the vital role of parental love in the lives of transgender youth. Salonga has openly discussed the emotional challenges of parenting a trans child, reinforcing the importance of open communication and honesty in their relationship, as highlighted in her interview with People Magazine.
Chien’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of support, love, and authenticity, both within families and in the broader community. As he continues to build his career in theatre and pursue his passions, his experiences resonate with many, offering hope and inspiration to those navigating their own journeys of self-discovery.
