At the recent European Taekwondo Championship held in Switzerland, Andrea Berisaj, an eighteen-year-old athlete, secured a bronze medal, marking a significant achievement for Montenegro in the sport. This accomplishment stands out as one of the best senior results in taekwondo for the country, according to local reports.
The competition also featured the continuation of the European Junior Championship, alongside the senior events in Olympic categories. Montenegro was represented by three athletes, with Berisaj competing in the under 67 kg category. She triumphed over Tijana Nikolic from Serbia and Cloe Blitek from France, earning her place on the podium. Berisaj’s journey towards the final was cut short by Nilsen Romund from Norway.
In the same championship, fellow competitor Ognjen Komatina from TK “Olimp” won against Tomas Sitteka from Czechia but faced elimination in the second round against Alexander Muskevits from Estonia. Another Montenegrin athlete, Zinedin Becovic from TK “S3”, was stopped by Russian competitor Stepan Slepova.
The coaching team has emphasized that Berisaj’s bronze medal is a noteworthy achievement, highlighting the potential for further success in upcoming world and European youth competitions. As the sport continues to grow in Montenegro, the expectations for its athletes remain high heading into future international events.
This achievement not only showcases Berisaj’s talent but also reflects the increasing competitiveness of Montenegrin athletes on the European stage. The results from Switzerland are likely to inspire and motivate younger competitors in the nation as they look towards their own aspirations in taekwondo.
