The Cribs Release ‘Gordon Raphael Sessions’ EP Ahead of Album

The Cribs have unveiled an EP featuring the early sessions recorded with producer Gordon Raphael for their latest album, Selling A Vibe. This release comes just days after the band’s ninth studio album debuted on January 9, 2024, under the labels Sonic Blew and PIAS. The EP provides fans with a glimpse into the initial creative process that shaped the album.

Initially recorded in Leeds, the sessions with Raphael, known for his work on The Strokes’ acclaimed albums, produced tracks that the band considered to be of high quality. Ryan Jarman, one of the band’s members, shared insights last year about the recordings, noting that while they sounded great, the group ultimately opted for a different direction. They decided to embrace a more pop-oriented style, enlisting Patrick Wimberley, a former member of Chairlift, to produce the final version of the album.

On January 15, The Cribs announced via Instagram that they would offer the Gordon Raphael Sessions EP as part of a digital deluxe edition of Selling A Vibe. In their post, they emphasized that these versions of the songs capture an “early and pure form” of their music, allowing fans to experience the evolution of their sound.

Critical Reception and Chart Performance

The album has already garnered notable acclaim, receiving a four-star review from NME. The publication highlighted the raw vocal performances on tracks such as “A Point Too Hard To Make,” and praised the blend of classic Jarman qualities with mature lyrical themes in songs like “Never The Same” and “Summer Seizures.” NME remarked that the trio has successfully evolved without losing their distinctive sound, demonstrating an impressive ability to innovate.

In its first week, Selling A Vibe made a significant impact on the UK Albums Chart, landing at number five, marking the highest debut of The Cribs’ career. The album trailed behind works by artists like Olivia Dean and Zach Bryan, as well as a greatest hits compilation from Fleetwood Mac.

Additional News from The Cribs

In related news, Ryan Jarman disclosed that a guitar stolen from him over two decades ago was recently found in the possession of popular bands The 1975 and Beabadoobee. This revelation adds a layer of intrigue to the band’s narrative as they continue to engage with their audience through music and personal stories.

The Gordon Raphael Sessions EP is now available on major streaming platforms, giving fans an opportunity to enjoy both the raw versions of the tracks and the polished final product of Selling A Vibe.
