Wrexham Council Proposes Reduction in Primary School Intake

Wrexham Council is set to host drop-in sessions next week to discuss proposed plans aimed at reducing pupil numbers at two primary schools in Rhos. The council is consulting with the public regarding changes to future pupil intake at Penygelli Community Primary School and Ysgol Maes y Mynydd. This initiative is a response to a significant surplus capacity of 22.1% in Wrexham’s primary schools, attributed to declining birth rates and a projected decrease in pupil numbers in the coming years.

As part of the proposed changes, the intake at Penygelli Community Primary School would be limited to 30 pupils in nursery and reception, down from 45, starting in September 2027. Similarly, Ysgol Maes y Mynydd would see its pupil intake capped at 45, a reduction from the current limit of 51, effective from the same date.

Public Engagement Opportunities

Wrexham Council encourages community members to engage with these proposals and share their perspectives during the drop-in sessions. These events will be held at both schools, allowing local residents to gather information and discuss the potential impact of the changes. The drop-in sessions are open to anyone interested in learning more about the proposed adjustments and contributing their views.

For those unable to attend in person, Wrexham Council has made additional resources available. Detailed information regarding the consultations can be accessed through the council’s official channels. Community members can also submit their opinions via email to [email protected] or [email protected].

Consultation Timeline

The consultation is scheduled to continue until February 2, 2026, providing ample opportunity for feedback from affected families and community members. The council aims to ensure that all voices are heard as it navigates these changes designed to optimize school capacities in response to shifting demographic trends.

For further information and updates regarding this consultation process, residents are encouraged to follow Wrexham Council’s communications or visit local news sources for ongoing coverage.
