Prince William Discusses George’s Transition to Secondary School

Prince William recently shared insights regarding his eldest son, Prince George, and his upcoming transition to secondary school during an interview in Brazil. The Prince of Wales, aged 43, was in the country for the 2025 Earthshot Prize ceremony, where he also engaged in various public commitments. During a candid conversation with Brazilian television host Luciano Huck, William reflected on family life and the changes that lie ahead for his son.

Although not officially confirmed by Kensington Palace, it is widely believed that the 12-year-old Prince George will begin his secondary education at Eton College in September 2026. This prestigious institution has a long history of educating British royalty, including William himself. While the prince did not specifically mention Eton during the interview, he did discuss how George’s life may change as he enters this new educational phase.

One notable change could involve Prince George receiving a mobile phone for the first time. Currently, William and his wife, Princess Kate, enforce a strict policy that prohibits their three children from having personal phones. Reflecting on this rule, William stated, “It is really hard. Our children don’t have phones.” He added that as George transitions to secondary school, he may be allowed to have a phone with limited access to ensure his safety online.

“We talk to him and explain why we don’t think it’s right. With full access, children end up seeing things on the internet that they shouldn’t. But with restricted access, I think it’s good for messaging,” William explained. This approach indicates the couple’s desire to balance modern parenting with protection and guidance.

As things stand, all three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—live with their parents at home. However, if George attends Eton, he will become a boarder, which may alter his daily interactions with William and Kate. This significant change in routine could lead to the decision to provide him with a phone, facilitating communication as he begins to navigate greater independence.

The move to secondary school represents a pivotal moment not only for Prince George but also for the entire royal family, as they adapt to new dynamics in their family life. As the eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales, his educational journey will undoubtedly be followed closely by the public and media alike.
