The Prince of Wales, Prince William, is delivering a poignant message about honoring veterans in a pre-recorded video that will be shared in schools across the United Kingdom today. The initiative coincides with Armistice Day, observed annually on November 11, and aims to instill values of empathy and responsibility in students aged 9 to 14.
In the video, William emphasizes the importance of taking time to remember those who have served. He states, “Coming together for Remembrance is a vital way to honour those whose service keeps us safe.” The message is part of the Royal British Legion‘s Remembrance Assembly, an online learning event accessible via YouTube and Zoom.
Emphasizing Personal Connection and Reflection
William further elaborates on the significance of remembrance, noting that it is an opportunity to connect with military service personally. “When we remember, we connect with service in a personal way. We learn from the courage of others, and we carry their stories forward, so they are not forgotten,” he asserts. The prince highlights that remembrance is not solely about the past but also shapes identities for the future.
He adds, “Remembrance teaches us empathy, resilience, and responsibility. And when we wear a red poppy or take a moment of silence, we are saying, ‘Thank you. We have not forgotten, and we will not forget.’” Drawing from his own military experience, he acknowledges the dedication of the Armed Forces, stating, “I have seen firsthand the hard work, dedication, and duty the Armed Forces carry out to ensure we are protected.”
The Assembly will also feature testimonies from current serving military personnel, including RAF Air Commander Fred Wigglesworth and Army Lieutenant Colonel Manpreet Maycock. Additionally, veterans from the Second World War will share their experiences, further enriching the educational experience for students.
Royal Observances and Personal Tributes
In a show of support for veterans, Prince William will join King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle for a reception honoring VJ veterans later today. This event marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, underscoring the royal family’s commitment to remembering those who served.
Meanwhile, Catherine, Princess of Wales, will attend the Armistice Day Service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. She will participate in a two-minute silence at 11:00 to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. During the service, a specially commissioned poem titled “A Sonnet For Us All,” written by the National Memorial Arboretum’s Poet in Residence, Arji Manuelpillai, will be read. The poem reflects on the personal connections and experiences formed through military service, themes that resonate deeply with the Princess.
Through these events and messages, the royal family continues to emphasize the importance of remembrance in fostering a sense of community and respect for those who serve.
