A new initiative, titled Every Moment Matters, has been launched in North Lanarkshire to encourage families to prioritize school attendance. The campaign aims to highlight the numerous benefits of regular school attendance, particularly in light of challenges stemming from the pandemic and the ongoing cost of living crisis.
The campaign emphasizes key aspects of school life, such as teamwork, life skills, and personal achievements, by sharing pupils’ own experiences of what they miss when they are not in school. Councillor Michael McBride, who serves as the convener of education, children, and families, stated, “Our schools are working closely with families to offer tailored support around school attendance and to put in place small steps that can make a big difference over time.”
Support Strategies and Resources
To facilitate improved attendance, schools are implementing various practical solutions, including breakfast clubs and initiatives like Future Fridays, which aim to create smoother mornings and promote positive routines. Parents are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling non-urgent appointments outside school hours and to maintain open lines of communication with teachers.
Reporting absences promptly and discussing any concerns with school staff can significantly impact a child’s ability to attend school regularly. The campaign also addresses the anxiety some children may feel about returning to school, with a clear message: staying home can make the transition back more challenging. Families are encouraged to engage with school staff, who are trained to listen and provide customized support to help students feel safe and confident in their environment.
Community Collaboration and Resources
Additional resources are available through organizations such as Parent Club, ParentLine Scotland, and Enquire. These organizations provide valuable advice on overcoming barriers like anxiety and bullying, as well as guidance on educational rights and responsibilities.
The central theme of the campaign is collaboration, highlighting the importance of parents, schools, and communities working together to ensure every child feels supported and valued. Toolkits to support the initiative will be distributed to all high schools in the area. These toolkits will contain posters for display, informational leaflets for parents, and social media assets to promote the campaign effectively.
The initiative reflects a commitment to improving school attendance and fostering a positive school culture, which is essential for children’s development and well-being. Through targeted support and community engagement, North Lanarkshire aims to ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive in their educational journey.
