Gwynedd Council Launches Innovative Bilingual App for Neurodivergent Support

Gwynedd Council has introduced a groundbreaking bilingual app named Niwro Cymru, designed to support neurodivergent individuals of all ages. This innovative resource offers a wealth of information, activities, and local event details, while also providing crucial support and other resources tailored to the needs of the neurodivergent community.

Developed in collaboration with local youth and their families, the app’s content, key features, and logo were shaped through extensive discussions. Notable functionalities include subtle animations, haptic feedback, non-disruptive sounds, and offline content to minimize data usage. The app also focuses on accessibility with enhanced contrast, thoughtful design, and a ‘text to speech’ feature to assist users with varying needs.

Community Commitment to Neurodiversity

Cllr Menna Trenholme, Cabinet Member for Children and Supporting Families, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “This app is an important step forward in recognising, celebrating, and supporting neurodiversity across our communities.” She added that the council is dedicated to enhancing its support services in Gwynedd and is confident that Niwro Cymru will serve as a valuable resource for families seeking information and activities.

The app is specifically designed with children in mind, featuring a bright, calming, and user-friendly interface. It is accessible for parents, carers, siblings, and professionals, ensuring that a wide audience can benefit from its offerings.

Partnerships and Future Goals

The development of the app was supported by the North Wales Regional Partnership Board, which collaborated with the council to turn this vision into reality. This marks a significant achievement as it is the first app of its kind available in both Welsh and English.

A representative from the National Neurodivergence Team expressed enthusiasm for the launch, remarking, “We are delighted to see the launch of Niwro Cymru, an innovative and inclusive resource that truly reflects the voices of neurodivergent people and their families.” They highlighted the app’s role in promoting accessibility and celebrating neurodiversity, which is essential for empowering communities in North Wales.

The app is available for free download, providing a valuable tool for families to navigate the available support and activities. For more information, users can visit the official website at www.gwynedd.llyw.cymru/autism.
