Aldi Scotland Invites Primary Schools to Celebrate Burns Day with Unique Supper

Aldi Scotland is offering primary school pupils in North Lanarkshire a unique opportunity to celebrate the legacy of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, with a traditional Burns Supper. The supermarket chain is hosting its inaugural Great Scottish Supper, aimed at engaging students in the culinary and literary traditions of Scotland.

As part of this initiative, one primary school class will win a complete Burns Day feast, which will feature classic dishes such as haggis, neeps, and tatties, along with modern variations like haggis bon-bons and vegetarian haggis. The event will also include a ceremonial bagpiper to enhance the festive atmosphere.

Schools across Scotland are encouraged to participate by submitting original Scots poems that capture the spirit of Robert Burns. This creative exercise allows students to engage with Scottish heritage and literature while expressing their own interpretations of the poet’s work. According to Aldi Scotland, the poems should reflect Burns’ story in a contemporary and imaginative manner.

Alan Leslie, Buying Director at Aldi Scotland, emphasized the company’s commitment to promoting Scottish food and drink. “As one of the most loyal supporters of Scottish food and drink, we believe we have a responsibility to ensure Scots of all ages can experience our most iconic culinary traditions,” he stated. Leslie added that the initiative is an excellent way for young people to explore their creativity while honouring Burns’ enduring legacy.

Participating classes can submit multiple poems and are invited to send their entries to [email protected] by January 23, 2024. This initiative is open to all primary school classes in Scotland, allowing students from various backgrounds to join in the celebration.

Aldi Scotland aims to make the Great Scottish Supper not only a culinary delight but also a learning experience that fosters appreciation for Scottish culture among the youth. The supermarket’s efforts to engage with local communities reflect a broader commitment to preserving and promoting Scotland’s rich culinary traditions.

As this initiative unfolds, many schools look forward to participating in a celebration that not only honors Robert Burns but also encourages students to connect with their cultural heritage through creative expression.
