Village Media launched its community network, **Spaces**, in **October 2024**, aiming to combat the toxicity prevalent on major platforms. CEO **Jeff Elgie** initiated this project after witnessing the detrimental effects of social media algorithms in his hometown of **Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario**.

This urgent move is a direct response to declining trust in social media, as users increasingly seek safer, more authentic spaces for interaction. With **105,000 unique users** and **12,500 fully registered members**, Spaces is already making waves in **13 communities**, fostering connections around shared interests like vintage cars and live music.

In a similar vein, **Daily Maverick** unveiled **Daily Maverick Connect** in **August 2023**, providing a secure environment for its **1,500 Insider members** to network and collaborate. Alet Law, head of audience development at Daily Maverick, emphasized the platform’s intent to give back to its community, stating, “People in the Insider community are so supportive… we just felt like it was time to give something back.”

Both initiatives reflect a strategic pivot by publishers who previously relied on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The shifting algorithms and declining referral traffic have proven these platforms unreliable. Elgie notes that Spaces operates with the “DNA of a news organisation,” prioritizing moderation to eliminate inflammatory content. “We’re not allowing massively inflammatory content, lies, violence, etc.,” he stated.

One of the standout features of Spaces is its chronological content presentation, devoid of algorithmic interference. Elgie explained, “There’s no algorithm that decides I’m going to throw a cat video in every three posts.” This approach has not only enhanced user experience but also deepened community ties, leading to real-world events like bi-weekly car shows organized through the platform.

Daily Maverick Connect aims to foster genuine interactions among its members, creating a forum-like atmosphere where individuals can share knowledge without the performative nature often seen on mainstream social media. Law noted, “Here, because it’s safe, people are comfortable to share and to be involved in those conversations.”

Both publishers have successfully integrated moderation tools to maintain a positive environment. Daily Maverick’s AI tool, designed to filter harmful content, has seen minimal use due to the community’s organic positivity. “It’s such an organic, authentic experience; there is no need for moderation,” Law added.

Building these community platforms is no small task. Elgie warns that smaller publishers may struggle to replicate this model without adequate resources and audience reach. Village Media invested nearly **two years** in research and development before launching Spaces, indicating a long-term commitment essential for success.
