A critical incident investigation has been launched following the discovery of a woman’s body in a vehicle outside a police station in Lake Illawarra, Australia. Police located the body at approximately 16:30 on December 5, 2025, after it had reportedly been in the car since about 18:30 on December 2, 2025.
The woman, 48 years old, was found in an advanced state of decomposition, leading authorities to believe she had been living in her vehicle. According to Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar, CCTV footage revealed that the woman had entered the police station on December 2, where she interacted with officers in the foyer before leaving at around 18:30.
Assistant Commissioner Cassar stated, “It does appear the woman had been living inside that vehicle.” He noted that the circumstances surrounding her visit to the station, whether to seek assistance or report an issue, will be investigated.
Conditions likely contributed to the tragedy. The weather during the days leading up to the discovery was reportedly hot, and the vehicle was locked, potentially creating extreme temperatures inside. As a result, the NSW Ambulance paramedics who assessed her at the scene were unable to revive her.

A crime scene has been established, and the South Coast Police District is handling the critical incident investigation. A spokesperson for the New South Wales Police confirmed that the investigation will undergo an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and will also be overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner to determine the circumstances of the woman’s death. The investigation aims to provide clarity on how the situation developed, given the woman’s prior engagement with law enforcement.
