King Charles will welcome Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu at Windsor Castle on March 18-19, 2024, leading to heightened security measures in the area. In preparation for this significant state visit, Thames Valley Police has announced an extensive security plan, which includes a temporary expansion of airspace restrictions over Windsor.
The air exclusion zone around the castle will be extended on March 18 from 07:00 to 23:59 GMT. Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of Thames Valley Police’s joint operations unit emphasized that these air restrictions are just one aspect of a comprehensive security operation. He stated, “Many measures will be visible, others will not. Anyone breaching the restrictions commits a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and could be arrested.”
An array of security personnel will be deployed throughout Windsor, including armed units, mounted police, and specialist search teams. Officers will conduct unpredictable patrols to deter any potential criminal activity. Furthermore, Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems and hostile vehicle mitigation barriers will be utilized to ensure the safety of dignitaries, spectators, and the general public during this historic occasion.
Planning for the visit has been extensive, as Hall noted, “Significant planning has gone into this state visit. We will ensure the safety of dignitaries, spectators and the public during this historic occasion.” Local residents and visitors have been advised to remain vigilant, with Thames Valley Police encouraging the reporting of suspicious activity via 101 or in emergencies, 999.
In the lead-up to the event, several road closures and parking restrictions will be implemented starting on March 17. Certain footways and crossings in the town centre will be closed intermittently to facilitate a ceremonial procession. These precautionary measures are designed to minimize disruptions while ensuring a secure environment for all.
The visit underscores the importance of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and the preparations reflect the significance of this engagement. As Windsor Castle prepares to host President Tinubu and his delegation, the community anticipates a successful state visit marked by enhanced security and cooperation.
