Ex-Soldier Stops Parade Crash Driver as Crowd Fleeing in Terror

A former soldier has been hailed a “hero” after intervening to stop a vehicle involved in a parade crash in Liverpool. On March 15, 2024, Daniel Barr jumped into the back of Paul Doyle’s Ford Galaxy, taking control of the car as it continued to move despite the driver pressing the accelerator. Barr’s actions prevented further injury to the crowd, which had transformed from a celebratory atmosphere to one of panic and desperation.

Witnesses reported that as Barr walked along Water Street, he observed the Galaxy speeding toward the crowd. He described the scene, noting that people were “flying into the air” as the vehicle struck multiple individuals. During a two-day sentencing hearing at Liverpool Crown Court, prosecutor Paul Greaney KC detailed how Barr instinctively opened the rear passenger-side door and climbed in with the intent to stop the driver.

In a series of dramatic moments, Barr leaned forward and shifted the car into ‘park’, holding the gearshift firmly. Although the vehicle did not stop immediately, Barr’s intervention ultimately halted its movement, despite Doyle’s continued attempts to accelerate. Greaney emphasized that Barr’s actions were crucial in bringing the car to a stop, stating that “the Galaxy did not stop immediately, but in the end it did.”

During police interviews, Paul Doyle claimed he had halted the vehicle upon realizing he struck someone. However, the prosecution argued that this statement was false. Greaney highlighted that Doyle had driven through a significant crowd along Dale Street and Water Street, reversing and driving forward multiple times.

The prosecutor further clarified, “What brought the Galaxy to a halt was a combination of the number of people trapped beneath the vehicle and the actions of Daniel Barr.” The court heard that Doyle had driven into a crowd of over one hundred individuals, resulting in various injuries, some of which were severe. Greaney reported that while many people sustained injuries, some narrowly avoided harm by jumping out of the way or being pulled to safety.

Doyle faces a total of 31 charges related to the incident, including dangerous driving, affray, and multiple counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. The court is expected to continue the sentencing proceedings until Tuesday, March 19, 2024, with live updates available for those following the case.

Barr’s courageous actions in the face of danger have drawn widespread admiration, underscoring the impact of individual bravery during a chaotic situation.
