The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has reported the seizure of nearly 20 million counterfeit erectile dysfunction tablets over the past five years, highlighting a significant rise in illegal drug sales. This alarming trend has prompted health officials to warn men against purchasing unauthorized medications online, which can pose serious health risks.
Between 2021 and 2025, the MHRA’s criminal enforcement unit confiscated approximately 19.5 million doses of fraudulent drugs marketed as treatments for erectile dysfunction, including 4.4 million doses seized in just 2025. The agency noted that the stigma surrounding erectile dysfunction is being manipulated by criminals who profit from the sale of these dangerous products.
Andy Morling, head of the MHRA’s criminal enforcement unit, stated, “Stigma and embarrassment are being exploited by criminals selling fake medicines that can seriously harm your health. These seizures show the sheer scale of the illegal market for erectile dysfunction medicines in the UK—and the risks people are taking without realizing.”
The MHRA has raised concerns that many of these counterfeit pills contain no active ingredients or are manufactured with incorrect dosages. Some have been found to include hidden drugs and toxic substances that can jeopardize health.
Annual seizures of these illegal medications have more than doubled since 2022. The MHRA, in collaboration with internet service providers, has been actively targeting online sellers. In 2025, the agency disrupted over 1,500 websites and social media accounts that were illegally promoting medical products, also removing 1,200 social media posts linked to such sales.
The MHRA emphasizes that any medicine not authorized for sale in the UK can be unsafe or ineffective. There is often no way for consumers to ascertain the contents of these products or the potential negative health effects they may cause. While some counterfeit pills may appear genuine, many can be extremely hazardous.
With the increasing prevalence of online sales of unregulated medications, authorities urge the public to exercise caution and prioritize their health by purchasing medicines only from licensed providers.
