URGENT UPDATE: Construction has officially commenced on a long-awaited housing development at the site of the former police station in Llanedeyrn, Cardiff. After more than five years of delays, local authorities announced that work began this week, following the planning approval granted in April 2020.
The old police station was demolished in 2017 as part of a multi-million pound regeneration project aimed at revitalizing the Maelfa suburb. The new residential development will create 41 fully accessible one and two-bedroom homes designed specifically for older individuals, promoting independent living within the community.
Local councillors informed residents on October 28, 2023, that construction would kick off immediately, marking a significant milestone after a prolonged waiting period. The initial phase includes piling the foundations for the new building, with heavy machinery set to drill into the ground, preparing for the installation of concrete and steel.
The development is not just about housing; it will feature communal facilities on the ground floor, providing essential areas for socializing and support. Additional amenities will include activity spaces, a staff room, a medical room, and a landscaped communal garden that connects to the existing Maelfa tower block.
This project is a key element of the Maelfa Regeneration Scheme, which aims to replace the old shopping center with a vibrant new retail area. The scheme plans to include nine shops, affordable housing, improved road infrastructure, and a car park with over 40 parking spaces.
Work on the site will take place Monday through Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM, as the community looks forward to the revitalization of the area. As construction progresses, the community is eager to see how these new homes and facilities will enhance the quality of life for residents in Llanedeyrn.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as construction continues to unfold.
