UPDATE: A West Lothian couple has officially reopened the Tally Ho, the only pub in Winchburgh, after an eight-month closure. Craig and Claire Smalley welcomed their first customers on December 11, marking a significant moment for the village and community spirit.
The Tally Ho has been a cornerstone of village life for over 100 years, but it had remained shuttered since April. The Smalleys, stepping into the hospitality scene for the first time, seized the opportunity through a unique scheme that alleviates the financial burden of sole ownership, allowing them to create a vibrant local hub.
With 15 years of experience, Craig has worked in renowned Edinburgh establishments like the Alexander Graham Bell and The Golf Tavern. He expressed excitement over Winchburgh’s transformative developments, including hundreds of new homes, stating, “The opportunity in Winchburgh is huge with all the new developments and people moving in.”
Despite ongoing challenges in the hospitality industry, Craig remains optimistic. “There was always going to be a sense of nervousness, but it was important to keep the belief that there are successful pubs out there,” he remarked. He and Claire are committed to continuous improvement, acknowledging that they will make mistakes but strive to better themselves daily.
The pub’s soft launch drew overwhelming support from locals, with Craig expressing gratitude on social media. He aims to foster relationships within the community, stating, “I want this place to be a hub in the heart of the village.”
The couple is also involving their two children, ages 9 and 5, in their new venture. Craig humorously noted, “My eldest is honestly the best PR tool we could have. She’s told every person she can about us opening.”
As Winchburgh continues to grow, the Smalleys are determined to create a welcoming space that appeals to both long-time residents and newcomers alike. They hope to bridge the gap between the village’s original inhabitants and the influx of new residents, creating a renewed sense of community.
The Tally Ho’s reopening is not just about serving drinks; it symbolizes a fresh start for the village and its residents. The Smalleys are eager to establish a pub that honors its history while embracing the future.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story, as the Tally Ho emerges as a beacon of community spirit in Winchburgh.
