URGENT UPDATE: Free and discounted TV licences are now available for eligible individuals, following a significant price increase from the Government. The annual TV Licence fee has risen to £174.50 as of April 1, 2025, but many could qualify for reductions.
The latest announcements have clarified the criteria for obtaining a free TV Licence, specifically targeting those over 75 years old who receive Pension Credit. This means if you or your partner qualify, you can access a free licence that covers everyone at your address.
Residents should note that Pension Credit is distinct from the State Pension. It is a means-tested benefit aimed at individuals over State Pension age who have a low income, boosting weekly income to £227.10 for singles and £346.60 for couples. Eligible individuals can apply for their free licence at the age of 74, but must continue paying until the end of the month before their 75th birthday.
Additionally, those who are blind or residing in care homes may apply for discounted licences. A residential care home discount reduces the licence fee to only £7.50, available for those over 60 years old or disabled. Furthermore, registered blind individuals or those living with them can receive a 50% discount, dropping the standard colour licence fee to just £87.25.
The Government emphasizes that for blind applicants, the licence must be registered in the blind person’s name. New applications can be made on the TV Licensing website, requiring the existing licence number for transfers.
For those eligible, applying for a free licence is straightforward. Individuals over 75 receiving Pension Credit can apply online or call 0300 790 6071 for assistance. Blind applicants can also reach out via the official TV Licensing website or by calling 0300 709 6050.
This announcement follows last year’s 2.9% price hike, which is now part of the ongoing adjustments tied to annual CPI inflation. The fee increase marks only the second rise since April 1, 2021, with future adjustments set until 2027.
As reports suggest that the licence fee could reach £182 next year, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has stated that no final decision has been made regarding the exact amount.
