UPDATE: Starting today, households receiving six specific benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) are eligible for an urgent £25 Cold Weather Payment as UK temperatures plummet. This initiative, announced by the Labour Party government, aims to support vulnerable populations during the cold winter months, effective from November 1 until March 31 each year.
With winter weather forecasts predicting temperatures dropping to 0°C or lower for a minimum of seven consecutive days, individuals receiving the following benefits will automatically qualify for these payments: Pension Credit, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest.
Each eligible household can receive £25 per week for each seven-day cold weather period, with payments expected to be processed within 14 working days after the cold spell is confirmed. This financial support is especially crucial as many families prepare for the holiday season, coinciding with the £10 Christmas Bonus that may be issued alongside the Cold Weather Payment in December.
If you believe you qualify but have not received your payment, it’s vital to act quickly. Contact your local pension centre or Jobcentre Plus office without delay. Universal Credit recipients can reach out to the Universal Credit helpline at 0800 328 9344 for assistance.
In an effort to ensure no one is left without support this winter, Age UK has also urged those needing help to reach out. They provide a free Advice Line, open from 8 AM to 7 PM, year-round, at 0800 678 1602. The charity has partnered with Wordskii to facilitate free interpreted calls for non-English speakers, making assistance more accessible.
As temperatures continue to drop, staying informed about these financial supports is critical. Share this information with those who may benefit, ensuring that everyone is aware of their eligibility for the Cold Weather Payment this winter. Stay warm and stay connected!
