Urgent Snow Warning Issued for Aberdeenshire and Moray Tonight

UPDATE: A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has just been issued by the Met Office for Aberdeenshire, Moray, and northern Scotland, effective overnight. As temperatures plummet, rain and sleet are expected to transition into snow, impacting travel and safety.

The Met Office warns of significant snow accumulations, predicting up to 8 cm in higher elevations above 300 metres. Even at lower levels, residents can expect 1-2 cm of snow, particularly as conditions worsen this evening. This urgent warning comes amid blustery northerly winds, intensifying the winter weather across the region.

According to Met Office officials, “Periods of rain, sleet, and snow will spread southeastwards across Scotland at times through Monday and into Monday night.” The forecast indicates that snow will initially accumulate on higher ground (above 200 metres) before descending to lower elevations as the night progresses.

Expect further scattered wintry showers to sweep in from the northwest later tonight into Tuesday morning. The worst conditions are anticipated on Monday evening, with forecasts of 2-5 cm of snow above 150 metres and potential accumulations of 1-2 cm at lower levels, away from north-facing coasts.

With temperatures dropping below freezing, icy conditions are likely on untreated surfaces, posing serious risks for motorists and pedestrians alike. Officials also warn of isolated lightning strikes, adding to the hazardous conditions.

In addition to the snow, strong north to north-westerly winds will sweep across the Northern Isles and northeastern parts of the mainland, where gusts could reach between 50-60 mph. These winds are expected to exacerbate the winter weather, creating dangerous driving conditions.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and monitor local weather updates as this situation develops. Prepare for possible disruptions to travel and ensure safety measures are in place.

Stay tuned for further updates as officials continue to assess the impact of the severe weather in Aberdeenshire, Moray, and surrounding areas.
